About Josh Nordwick
Not only has Josh helped 100s of clients achieve lifestyle transformation, he's been through a transformation of his own. Josh is the author of Mountain Fit: The Hunter's Fitness Solution.
As a fitness professional, Josh has led hundreds of clients through individualized training programs in a semi-private training setting - working with everyone from professional athletes to busy moms and everything in between. He now focuses on transforming the lives of hunters and preparing them for the physical challenges of the wild. He provides training and nutrition program with cutting edge change psychology to guarantee results.
He credits all of his hunting successes to his dad and brothers at Montana 6'ers, but he makes for a good pack mule.
In four years, he added 70 pounds (120 to 190) of bodyweight, cut a full second off his 40 yard dash (5.4 to 4.4), and added 11 inches to his vertical jump (25 to 36.)
He has a couple top certifications, yet he doesn't consider himself a personal trainer.
- National Academy of Sports Medicine – Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)
- Precision Nutrition- Certified Fitness Professional (Pn1)
He has been studying fitness/nutrition for 7 years and counting.
He had a two year stint where he was playing college football and going to school for engineering before realizing that it was the wrong path – thanks to an ACL surgery leaving him on the couch with plenty of time to ponder life.
He is a student of self-mastery in all aspects – self-reliance, self-control, emotional mastery, philosophy, relationships, etc. While his blog will touch on all these topics, it will be focused on fitness for hunters.
Why do I work with hunters?
While I was growing up in Montana, hunting was a way of life. It’s all anyone in my family cared to talk about. Family get-togethers quickly became hunting story-time. To be honest, I was more interested in sports and fitness at this time.
The older I get, the stronger my draw to the outdoors. Regardless of what you call it, it's one of the few places that I really feel God. But this isn't the real reason that I work with hunters.
The real reason is my dad. Several years ago, my dad was in tough shape. He spent his entire life doing physical labor in order to provide a decent life for our family. The result was decades of excruciating back pain.
Over time, things continued to get worse. One day, while getting out of bed, he slipped a disc in his back. This left him in bed for a month. It was all he could do to make it to my brother’s wedding. He didn’t know what to do. The doctors gave him pain pills and the surgeons wanted to do surgery.
While working as a personal trainer/strength coach, I was working with my dad on the side to fix his spinal alignment and help him regain his fitness.
He recently called me to tell me that he hit a new PR on deadlift and that he is stronger than me again. It took a lot of hard work, but he has made a real, lasting transformation. Words cannot explain how happy this made me. (Learn more about my dad’s story by signing up for the newsletter below.)
I know there are lots of people out there in situations similar to my dad’s. You’ve sacrificed a lot for your family. You’ve spent countless hours providing for them and working on your career. If you’re anything like him, you’d do it all again.
Here’s the thing: somewhere along the way you sacrificed your health and fitness. Somewhere in the course of twenty years, you’ve added 20 pounds. Recreational sports have become beer and wings. The time you spent on fitness is now spent on family and work.
There is nothing inherently wrong with this, provided that you are happy. When you’re not happy with the way you look and perform, it's hard - not only on you but also on your family. They look to you for guidance.
As much as you hope that your kids will “do as you say and not as you do”, chances are they will be very similar. When your son thinks of what a man is, he thinks of you. When your daughter thinks of the type of man she should marry, you're the template.
What you do today has a direct impact on who your kids will become and what they will think of as normal.
I'm not here to tell you that you need to train like an elite athlete. I'm not going to try to convince you that if you want to be in shape for hunting that you need to hit the weights 6 days a week and consume 20 different supplements. Because you don't. And anybody who tells you that is full of shit - even if they are fueled by mountain ops.
You won't find any 7 day nutritional cleanses, 6 minute abs, or any instant fixes here. You've been around, and quite frankly, you're too old for that shit.
Here's the truth: 95% of people's fitness goals can be accomplished with 3-5 hours of well-planned exercise per week and small nutritional changes that target your limiting factors.
If you want to have a successful fitness transformation, you need a great plan and great support. It really is that simple. But don’t confuse simple with easy. If it were easy, 66% of the population wouldn't be overweight.
On this site and the Mountain Fit group, I'll give away as much free content as possible to help you accomplish your goals. One thing I'm particularly proud of is that my site is 100% free of ads and bias. I have no affiliation with any fitness equipment, supplement, or hunting brand. The result is complete autonomy over the information to ensure that it serves you best.
If you feel like you're not quite the man that you once were, my mission is to help you become an even better version of that man. Not just so that you can kill a big bull, but so that you can be the person that your wife and kids love and respect.
You mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I want to help you exceed these expectations. More importantly, I want you to meet the expectations that you set for yourself. That's what it is really about.
When you are proud of the way you look and perform, you'll have the confidence that it takes to be the man that you aspire to be – to set an example for your family.
My mission is to help you create sustainable fitness that you can maintain for the rest of your life. By joining this community, someday you'll be chasing your grandkids through the wilderness and sharing your love for the outdoors with them.
Along the way, you'll get in kick ass hunting shape, revamp your sex life, and gain the ability to chase those dream bulls in the backcountry.
"When I first started this program, I didn’t have a lot of experience with weightlifting. I was concerned that I would struggle with technique without having a trainer with me.
Josh provided detailed video and text instructions on how to execute the lifts and answered any questions that I had about them.
In testing the 10 week program for Josh, I have learned how and what to do in the gym to become a more able mountain hunter. Besides losing weight, gaining endurance and strength, Josh’s program has taught me easy to follow habits to improve my overall fitness through diet and exercise." - Nathan, Utah
"I wasn’t sure if I was 100% up for the challenge, physically or mentally. Sharing this journey with others is hard and nobody wants to be judged.
My main goals were to lose weight and increase my stamina. Josh was very motivating and always positive with his responses, whether it was to a triumph or a shortfall.
In 10 weeks, I lost 24 pounds. I went from doing 1-2 mile ruck marches with 20 pounds, to 7-8 mile ruck marches with 55 pounds. I’m disappointed this program is over! But it’s the start of a better life for me!!" - Armando, California
"Since we were total strangers, allowing Josh to have control of my fitness routine was a little tough at first. Josh did a great job of answering my questions and concerns.
My top 2 goals were fat loss and endurance. Endurance has always been a struggle. I dropped 13 pounds and double digit inches. I’ve steadily increased my pack weight from 20 pounds to 60 pounds for my hikes.
I was also able to figure out my macros in a way that has kept my energy up and the fat coming off. I would say I’m 90% there with fine tuning my food. The program also increased my flexibility.
I liked the fact that as a group, we could privately express our concerns, struggles, accomplishments, goals etc. with others doing the same. It helps keep you accountable and motivated." - Cheryl, Virgina
"When I started the program, I didn’t know how I would find the time to complete the workouts. I had tried to put a program together by myself, but it never went anywhere. This program showed me where to start.
In 10 weeks, I lost 15 pounds and felt myself getting stronger. I went from doing 3 sets of 5 push ups to 3 sets of 30 push ups." -Ryan, Ohio
